Ultimate Beginner Quilt: Prepare for Quilting

Today on the Jolly Jabber blog you’ll learn how to prepare your quilt for free-motion or straight-line quilting. I use 505 basting spray for all my quilting, and I love it. There’s no smell and very little overspray. In fact I simply scoot my kitchen table over and baste my quilt on the floor. Once I’m done, I mop my floor to take care of any overspray. Did I tell you that I’m piecing my quilt back? It’s still in process!

The narrow strips of navy fabric are the quilt’s binding.

Let’s Prepare for Machine Quilting

I’ve quilted most of my quilts myself, either doing free-motion or straight-line quilting. There’s always something new to learn, and I’m going to practice a lot this winter. I took quilting classes at my local quilt shops, watched numerous videos, and read books. Recently I bought a few of Angela Walters’ quilting rulers from the Fat Quarter Shop so I can add a new skill. And like you, I can’t wait to watch Gina Tell show us how to quilt our beginner quilts. Be sure to watch on the Fat Quarter Shop YouTube channel.

I’ll probably practice my free-motion quilting skills on my Cobblestone Lake quilt. I’ll also have my nieces practice quilting something small before tackling their Ultimate Beginner Quilts. It’s nice to work on a quilt that you’re not afraid to mess up before taking on a bigger project. I even bought a printed panel for practice; it’ll take the place of several small quilt “sandwiches.”

Have fun putting your Ultimate Beginner Quilt together!

Joyfully,

Tracie
