Shine Bright Sampler QAL: Taking the Scenic Route

The Fat Quarter Shop’s Shine Bright Sampler quilt-along begins on November 1. I shared a little bit in this post about my plan, and here’s a photo of my first three blocks for November: Beehive, Bee’s Knees, and Bliss.

I’m using two of Camille’s fabric lines: Nantucket Summer and Dwell.

I like making sampler quilts because each block allows customization with either fabric choices or changes to the block itself. Since I’m a fan of Camille Roskelly’s patterns, I will mix in a few of her other designs. If you bought a Shine Bright kit or Lighthearted fabric bundle, enjoy following along. Just know that you can take the scenic route if you want to experiment.

Now I’ll tell you how I’m going rogue next month (December).

I’m making my quilt from two of Camille’s older fabric lines: Nantucket Summer and Dwell. I confess to being obsessed with Nantucket Island. I’ve never visited there; however, I have books about the history and architecture of Nantucket and I follow several Instagram accounts (@greyladygirl).

When Camille introduced her Nantucket Summer fabric, she also designed the Sail quilt. I knew my Shine Bright Sampler needed a sailboat. After studying the quilt’s layout, I plan to replace six blocks with a boat from Camille’s pattern, Sail. I also designed a block to represent the Brant Point Light Station, a Nantucket Island icon. (I’ll swap it in for December’s Bloom block.) Here’s a sneak peek from my scenic route!

I hope you feel inspired to sew along or follow my progress over the next 12 months. I’ll post photos on the first of each month on Instagram. The quilt-along schedule is in the Bonnie and Camille Sewing Bee book and on the Jolly Jabber blog. If you plan to sew along, download the free fabric requirements and coloring sheet from the Fat Quarter Shop.

And here’s one more peek: a bit of inspiration I keep in my sewing room. When I saw the wood sailboat at Target, I knew it belonged to my little collection of books and art.

Shining Bright!
