Spinning Spools: Jolly Bar Row Along

Welcome to the Fat Quarter Shop’s Jolly Bar Row Along week 2 when we sew five Spinning Spools blocks. Do you love spools of thread? Kimberly Jolly, the owner of the Fat Quarter Shop definitely has a thing for thread.

Do you have old wooden spools of thread displayed in your sewing room? I have a few. But their beauty does not compare to these spools I discovered on Instagram by Foxglove & Field. These handmade pattern weights are crafted in the “rolling Lincolnshire Wolds” (UK) and shipped to adoring fans. I would love to have a set! And now I’m making plans to stitch the 47-inch square Spinning Spools quilt (found in the Jolly Bar Book Vol. 2) with some cute little floral prints.

Spinning Spools

To sew the Spinning Spools blocks for the Jolly Bar Row Along you’ll need a copy of the new Jolly Bar Book Vol. 2 from the Fat Quarter Shop and the weekly instructions found at the Jolly Jabber blog. In case you missed it, you’ll find all the information to start your quilt at the Jolly Jabber kick-off post.

Last week I mentioned that I set aside five low-volume (light-colored jolly bars) for the “thread” portion of Spinning Spools. To add a little pizazz, I added small red strips to one block. Since I’m using a layer cake, I have extra fabric for play. If you’re using a jolly bar, you can use leftover fabric from another project.

The red stripes are about a half-inch wide. I cut the red strips a bit wider and trimmed after sewing each seam. Of course, you can customize any number of blocks. Make this sampler quilt your own! Kimberly Jolly’s Row Along quilt is pictured below.

Be sure to visit the Jolly Jabber blog for all the details. And you’ll find more inspiration from a few more bloggers who are sewing along. The Jolly Bar Book Vol. 2 contains 20 different quilts with complete instructions. So the Jolly Bar Row Along quilt is just a sampling of all the quilty goodness you’ll find in the book.

Joyfully,

Tracie
