Perfect 5 Quilts: Animal Crackers and Gingerbread
Welcome to the Perfect 5 Quilts sew-along with the Fat Quarter Shop! I’m excited to share my Cobblestone Lake Quilt with you. It combines the Animal Crackers and Gingerbread blocks from the Perfect 5 Quilts book by It’s Sew Emma.
The beautiful jewel-tone Kansas Troubles Favorites charm packs and coordinating background have a great fall-to-winter vibe. And cold weather (and possibly snow) is moving into my part of the USA this weekend. Yikes! The quilt measures 39-inches by 51-inches, and I plan to back it with Cuddle cloth. (If you want a really fluffy backing, try double fleece, which I used for the Autumn Stars baby quilt.)
Quick Cuts with Creative Grids Rulers
I use a lot of charm packs for baby quilts, lap quilts, pillows, and table decor. The Creative Grids Perfect 5 Ruler makes cutting the squares into smaller units a breeze. The markings are very clear and the ruler doesn’t slip. I also like working with smaller rulers that fit in my hand. They’re less tiring to grip and I can work in a small cutting space.
I also used the Creative Grids 1.5-inch by 6.5-inch ruler while making this quilt. In fact, I keep this narrow ruler by my sewing machine all the time. It’s handy for checking my quarter-inch seam allowance, drawing stitching lines, and trimming corners.
Cobblestone Lake Quilt Design
Here’s a flat view of the Cobblestone Lake Quilt top on my design wall. The center of the quilt is the Animal Crackers quilt from the Perfect 5 Quilts book. However, instead of adding a plain border, I surrounded the blocks with colorful Gingerbread blocks. The center of the quilt uses navy, green, and black prints. Whereas the border includes all the colors in the fabric line.
My quilt was inspired by the Cobblestone Lake neighborhood. Don’t those Animal Cracker blocks remind you of Cobblestones?
Wouldn’t this be a fun quilt for a child? My son loved setting up Playmobile and Lego people in imaginary settings. This quilt would be so cute if it were made in bright colors and tiny farm animal prints. I’m sure I’ll make another one in the future just to try it!
Mix Up Your Own Sweet Quilt
I hope you’ll consider making the Perfect 5 Quilts sampler or mixing up your own sweet creations. The instructions in the book are clear. So, you can easily adjust any of the 16 patterns to make a smaller project.
There’s room for creative adjustments, too. Instead of cutting background fabric for the inner rectangles, I used the low-volume light-colored charm squares. I think it gives the quilt a delightfully scrappy look.
With the Perfect 5 Quilts book and Ruler, you can easily use fabric scraps, charm squares, or yardage in your stash to make a quilt before winter.
Joyfully,
Tracie
