What’s Not to Love about True Blue?
Here’s a very fun finish for the first day of September: a Moda Love quilt made from Feed Sacks True Blue. Linzee Kull McCray designed this line of fabric for Moda with inspiration from original feed sacks. Since I come from a long line of farm families, I’m sure my grandmothers and great-grandmothers stitched aprons, curtains, and even clothing from this sturdy fabric. You can learn more on Linzee’s blog!
When I saw a Moda Love Layer Cake quilt made in Feed Sacks True Blue on Instagram, I immediately scoured the Internet for a layer cake. I had to make this quilt! The free pattern is available on the Moda Fabrics website. As you can see, Wally is becoming a natural quilt model. As soon as we hold up a quilt, he trots over for a photo shoot.
Feed Sacks: True Blue Details
The large design shows off the great designs in the True Blue fabrics. These are a few of my favorite prints.
I was able to locate four fat quarters beside the layer cake, so I included a few duplicates of my favorite prints in the quilt. Then I used twelve remaining pieces to cobble together a biased binding. I love the All-In-One Quilter’s Reference Tool because I can find tables of measurements and great instructions for so many facets of the quiltmaking process. I rarely make bias-cut binding, so this book was incredibly helpful. (Sherri McConnell of A Quilting Life recommended this book years ago.)
Honestly, I wasn’t sure how well this pieced binding would work with so many seams. However, it turned out just as I hoped it would — perfectly scrappy!
Moda Love in Our Guest Room
In my last post, I shared photos of my Summer Picnic quilt in two guest bedrooms. Originally, I planned to use it on my son’s bed but liked it better on my daughter’s bed. Guess what? The True Blue quilt looks great in my son’s room!
I draped a runner I made from vintage feed sacks to complete the look. At last, this Sherwin Williams French Moire blue bedroom has the right pop of color to warm it up.
One Monthly Goal for September
I have one more quilt to bind, and I plan to finish it this month. I’m trying big-stitch hand binding for the first time, using a Big Stitch needle from Primitive Gatherings and pearle cotton thread. I’ve been slowly stitching away in the late evenings while watching Murdoch Mysteries with my husband.
This weekend Minnesota may experience record-high temperatures, so I might be spending some time stitching in our cool basement. How about you? Do you have any fun plans for the USA Labor Day weekend?
Joyfully,
Tracie
