Check Out the Free Lend and Borrow Quilt Block Pattern
The free Lend and Borrow quilt block pattern is the newest in the Fat Quarter Shop’s classic and vintage series. Don’t be daunted by all those tiny half-square triangles! If you use Triangles on a Roll, you’ll get accurate results every time. Since I love blocks like this (see my super popular Lady of the Lake quilt), I watched triangle paper tutorials and became comfortable with this new-to-me technique. Be sure to watch the Lend and Borrow YouTube tutorial for all the tips from Kimberly Jolly.
I made my Lend and Borrow quilt block from the Dover fabric collection by Brenda Riddle. Then I turned the block into a pillow cover. It matches the napping quilt I’ve enjoyed so much this summer!
Tips for Sewing Half-Square Triangles
- Starch your fabric before you cut it.
- Press with a dry iron. When I used steam, the biased edges stretched.
- Double check the orientation of your blocks at each step.
If you’d like to make a Lend and Borrow quilt, the Fat Quarter Shop offers a low-cost Lend and Borrow pattern. They also created a lovely Lend and Borrow kit that features Betsy Chutchian’s fabric line, Maria’s Sky.
A Great Tip from the Sampler Spree Sew Along
This summer wanted to improve my piecing and quilting skills. On the top of the list was perfecting these small triangles! I also want to become more comfortable using some of my specialty rulers. So I joined the fun Sampler Spree Sew Along, sponsored by Moda Fabrics. I read all the tips in the Sampler Spree book, and I highly recommend it! The relevant tip for Lend and Borrow is to make one block with the free pattern. That will help you decide whether you’re ready to make a whole quilt. I think you’ll decide that the Triangles on a Roll are a worthwhile investment!
Joyfully,
Tracie
I’m an affiliate of the Fat Quarter Shop, so when you click on a link I provide, I’ll receive a small percentage of the sales. The pattern is still free, and the price of anything you purchase is not affected. You’re simply supporting my blog in another meaningful way. Thank you!
