Cheetos Bag Zippered Pencil Pouch

You can make a Cheetos bag pencil pouch for a snack-loving kid in a jiffy. Then tuck in a few fun markers, pens, treats, and even a gift card, and you’ve got a snazzy gift. Of course, you can use any brand of food bag or candy wrapper. Simply apply iron-on vinyl and complete the project like any other zipper pouch. And I have a few tips to smooth out the process.

I discovered this project idea on Pinterest. Joan Hawley of Lazy Girl Designs wrote a pattern that uses her own brand of Slicker Iron-On Glossy Vinyl. Several years ago, I purchased and constructed a few of Joan’sbag patterns, so I knew the project would come together well. But I decided that a few changes would make this bag even better.

Tips for Making a Vinyl Zipper Pouch

I prepared my Cheetos bag as described in the pattern. However, I overlooked a key difference between a bag of chips and a candy wrapper. The Cheetos bag has a foil lining that heats up quickly and easily. After my first attempt at applying vinyl resulted in a crinkled, melted spot in the middle, I turned down the heat setting of my iron to level 2 (nylon and silk) and quickly ironed on the vinyl in only a few seconds.

I followed the rest of the instructions and achieved good results. In fact, my niece was thrilled to receive this bag with the cute apple lining (cotton, not ripstop nylon)! Yet, I would make a minor change to the zipper installation. I loved the zipper instructions for this mini bag, so when I make another vinyl-covered bag, I’ll enclose the zipper ends. In fact, both bags follow very similar instructions, so once you apply the vinyl, you can easily switch over to the free Mini Scrap Patch Bag instructions. Bonus tip: Definitely use a By Annie zipper! They are much easier to sew into a bag because of the extra-wide zipper tape.

What bag or wrapper would you choose for a pencil pouch? Let me know! There are some cute seasonal candy bags that are tempting me to make another pouch soon.

Joyfully,

Tracie
