Ultimate Beginner Quilt Block 8: Sawtooth Star

Welcome to block 8 of the Ultimate Beginner Quilt sew-along: Sawtooth Star. You can find the free pattern and a tutorial on the Fat Quarter Shop blog. So, let’s take a look!

I made my Sawtooth Star block with a green print fabric from Moda’s Day in Paris and three colors of Moda Grunge. The green print in the center of the star has flecks of gold, adding a wonderful sparkle that befits the fabric line’s namesake: Paris, the City of Light. (A side note: Paris is referred to as the City of Light because of their early adoption of street lamps to improve public safety during the 1800s.)

Last week we learned how to sew flying geese units. You’ll make the same units this week to create star points.

The Versatile Sawtooth Star

This is my favorite block because it looks great with other blocks. And guess what—I’ve already started my next quilt that includes sawtooth stars. In fact, if you’re wondering what’s next after your Ultimate Beginner Quilt, I suggest making a Butterfly Patch Quilt by Lella Boutique. Vanessa Goertzen, the pattern designer, incorporated blocks you already learned to sew: stripes, nine patch, half-square triangles, and sawtooth stars!

I already made a small version of Butterfly Patch (Baby Butterfly Patch) from the Garden Variety fabric line. This time I’m making the full-size pattern (with a small change) from my Day in Paris fabric stash. Here’s a little peek below at one of the Butterfly Patch blocks layered over today’s block. As you can see, the Butterfly Patch block is half the size, finishing at 6 inches square. So, even though the blocks are the same as the Ultimate Beginner Quilt, they are more challenging to sew accurately because of the smaller pieces.

Are you keeping up with the sew-along? Don’t feel discouraged if you are too busy to complete each block according to the schedule. The Fat Quarter Shop tutorials will always be there to watch when you’re ready to jump back in. The whole point is to enjoy the process. Quilting is meant to be fun!

Joyfully,
