Recently the Fat Quarter Shop invited me to participate in the Lady of the Lake quilt along. I was so excited to play with fabric I pulled from my vault of happiness and learn a few new tricks along the way. Check it out! Maybe you’ll decide to make a Lady of the Lake quilt; it’s perfect for all my family in friends living in the Land of 10,000 Lakes (Minnesota).

Constructing the Quilt Block

Lady of the Lake is a classic block constructed of half-square triangles: one large unit and seven smaller units. You can find a free pattern at the Fat Quarter shop.

I quickly assembled the blocks by using Triangles on a Roll. The concept is similar to drawing from dot to dot in a coloring book. Kimberly Jolly shows you all the steps in the Classic and Vintage – Lady of the Lake video tutorial.

I already had 2″ Triangles on a Roll, so my blocks are smaller than the Fat Quarter Shop pattern: 8½″ rather than 12½″. Happily, with this smaller size, I was able to create three Lady of the Lake blocks from one fat quarter of fabric plus the background fabric. There was very little waste!

Assembling the Lady of the Lake Quilt

To construct the quilt, you can purchase a Lady of the Lake Classic and Vintage PDF pattern or a Lady of the Lake Quilt Kit. (I’m not affiliated with the Fat Quarter Shop, so I won’t benefit from your purchase.)

I used the free block pattern and styled my quilt after the photo of the kit; however, since my blocks are smaller, my completed quilt measures 42″ x 53″ — perfect for a baby or lap quilt.

A Blanket of Love

I wanted to stage the finished quilt by a lake, but when I finished stitching we were near a trout stream, not a lake. So my husband put on his fly fishing gear and hoisted the quilt from the water. Does anyone else have a pet who thinks he needs to be in every photograph?!

This quilt will be perfect for cozy evenings!

But this quilt isn’t staying in Minnesota. It’s a gift for my daughter who is moving to Texas next week. I want to wrap her in a blanket of love. And she will remember her mom and dad back home, paddling kayaks on one of the ten thousand lakes.
