Classic Maple Leaf Quilt Block

Welcome to the Fat Quarter Shop’s quilt along, showcasing the classic and vintage maple leaf quilt block. This is definitely one of my favorite blocks — it’s simple to make and always stunning in a swirl of fall colors, whether you choose something soft or bold. For this project, I pulled fabrics from my treasured Fig Tree and Co. stash and made four 9-inch maple leaf blocks in traditional fall colors.

I simply stitched the four blocks together to form an 18-inch square pillow cover. I prefer this finished size because I change pillow covers with the season and use the same Ikea Fjädrar duck feather inner cushion. The back of my pillow cover has an envelope-style opening, which doesn’t require a zipper or button closure. If you haven’t made a three-piece pillow cover before, I wrote a tutorial for Hunker that will walk you through the steps.

During autumn, our family uses a lot of quilts, throws, and pillows to get comfortable for reading in the morning or watching TV at night. The soft colors and classic maple leaf quilt blocks are a perfect match for my fresh traditional style.
