Christmas in July: Postage Stamp Star Quilt Block
This week I pieced a Postage Stamp Star quilt block. It’s a free Classic and Vintage block pattern from the Fat Quarter Shop. They also have a complete pattern for four quilt sizes, plus a beautiful Postage Stamp Star kit. You can find more details and a video tutorial at Fat Quarter Shop’s blog, the Jolly Jabber.
To make my block, I used a fat quarter of black background fabric and a charm square pack. Both are from the Lella Boutique Little Tree fabric line. The quilt block takes longer to construct if you cut individual blocks rather than strip sets. However, it shows how flexible this pattern is; you can use scraps, precuts, or yardage.
I should have colored a simple mock-up of my block. After stitching it together, I thought the center square needed some color, so I fussy-cut a poinsettia and attached it with Lite Steam-a-Seam 2. Here’s a photo without the additional flower. Which do you prefer?
I’m going to use the Little Tree panel to make a coordinating Christmas quilt. (Note: I’ll reveal my unique use of this panel on my blog this Sunday.) Today I slipped the panel out of the package and hung it on my design wall to release some wrinkles. Chester thought I was setting up a photo shoot with him as the star.
I hope you try making a Postage Stamp Star block and let me know if you decide to make a quilt. A red and white quilt is classic; however, I think this quilt would look great in any color combination. I’m a fan of green and white quilts, especially with a novelty print on the back.
On July 21 I’ll be back to show you my Christmas quilt. I hope you’ll be inspired!
Joyfully,
Tracie
